Osteoporosis
This is a condition of a thinning of our bones that can lead to painful fractures, height loss, and early death for 20% of women who fracture a hip.
Screening is easy with a comfortable test called a dexascan, sometimes, additional bloodwork may be done to assess the reason for bone loss.
Women lose the most amount of bone the first 5-10 years after the menopause. Some insurance companies want you to wait until the age of 65 before you have a dexascan. It can be beneficial to have a dexa earlier as a baseline.
There are medications available for treatment and there are lifestyle changes that can be beneficial in maintaining the bone you currently have and keeping strong for your future.
